Running to get fit, but are you fit to run?

During February and March, we generally see an increase in the number of running related injuries, with this year being no different from the rest. With many of the runners trying to qualify for the Comrades Marathon as well as those recreational 10km, 21km runners trying to achieve their PB.

Some of the findings upon assessment includes:

· General lack of musculoskeletal strength and conditioning.

· Training errors and incorrect load management

· Biomechanical abnormalities

· Improper footwear

· And more…

Many runners focus only on their on-road training and tend to neglect their off-road training. What we are finding, more so amongst female athletes (yet not excluding males), includes lack of pelvic, knee and ankle stability triggering a chain reaction.

It Is important to first be assessed before commencing training as well as follow a structured on-road and off-road training program with the correct progression. A Biokineticist will be able to assist in assessing and compiling this individualised program to help you achieve your running goals this year and hopefully prevent injuries.
